    "Eran las diez de la noche, el pasillo de la iglesia apenas dejaba ver algunas sombras que se formaban con la luz de algunas veladoras encendidas, de pronto; el llanto de una niña, se escuchó tan cerca que erizó hasta el último de mis cabellos..."

    Guanajuato no es el único lugar de la República donde se han reportado casos de momificación, aunque no lo creas, el municipio de Santa Elena en Yucatán, presenta sus propias momias.

    En 1980 fueron descubiertos fortuitamente, 12 pequeños sarcófagos, de los cuales 4 están expuestos al público. Sobre una elevación natural yace el templo franciscano de San Mateo, sitio que resguarda el cadáver de cuatro niñas semi-momificadas; su vestimenta y otras características del sepelio indican que los restos datan del siglo XIX. Estas pequeñas se han convertido en custodias y defensoras del pueblo, donde han surgido leyendas relacionados a llantos que han sido escuchados en el interior de la iglesia.

    Actualmente, el Museo de las momias de Santa Elena es el único que muestra evidencias de momificación en el estado. En su interior se exponen elementos de los ritos funerarios que se practicaban en la época que abarca desde el período prehispánico hasta el siglo XIX. Si quieres conocer más acerca de la historia de estas momias, no dejes de visitar el poblado de Santa Elena (ubicado cerca de la zona arqueológica de Uxmal), comunidad que conserva relatos únicos de la zona Puuc de Yucatán.
